Let’s now give you some insight how Norck manufactures parts with metal extrusion.
It is a metal forming process in which a metal workpiece is forced (hot or cold) through a die to reduce its cross section and to form the desired shape (the extrudate). It is mainly used in making pipes, rods, and tubes. The metal extrusion process is used for high and medium-volume production.
Metal extrusion uses ferrous and non-ferrous metals such as copper, lead, aluminum alloys, steel, and titanium.
Metal extrusion offers many advantages:
• Low production costs: The production cost is reduced.
• Accuracy: Metal extrusion offers tight tolerances, around ±0.05mm. Post-machining might be required for functional surfaces.
• Complex shapes: Metal extrusion provides complex shapes within closer tolerances than many other mass production processes.
• Rapid fabrication process: The fabrication process time is cut short due to the simplicity of the process.
At Norck, we offer two types of extrusion:
1. Direct extrusion: A hot billet is loaded into a container and forced through an extrusion die. A ram applies the extruding force. In direct extrusion, the metal flow from the Die in the same direction as the ram.
2. Indirect extrusion: Indirect extrusion requires less force than direct extrusion because the moving part is the container and the billet, while the ram is fixed. Hence less friction between the billet and the container. Less friction allows using larger billets, higher extrusion speeds, the ability to extrude smaller profiles, less wear of the container, and fewer extrusion defects (coarse zones).
Obtaining a fully functional part might require extra processing for features that can be made with the Metal extrusion process, such as taping, polishing, and plating. The designed part should follow Metal extrusion design guidelines.
