Sheet metal shearing is a versatile manufacturing process that cuts sheet metal into specific sizes or shapes. It can be used to make straight lines or more complex shapes. Cutting is similar to scissors, where the punch cuts down onto the die to cut through the metal sheet.
Shearing machines can be hand-operated, mechanical, or hydraulic, and they are used to cut different thicknesses of metal sheets. It can be used in several applications, including automotive, aerospace, construction, etc.
The sheet metal shearing process can be used in several industries, such as:
• Construction: Bending components for construction projects such as roofing and siding
• Automotive: Bending sheet metal for use in body parts such as doors, hoods, and fenders
• Aerospace: Bending sheet metal for use in the manufacturing of fuselage, doors, and fenders
• Advertising: Bending sheet metal for signage and advertising, including signs and billboards
• Food processing: Bending sheet metal for beverages, kitchen equipment
• Transportation: Bending sheet metal parts for cars, trains, buses, and aircraft
• Art: Bending sheet metal for use in building cladding
Shearing is done using a blade, the cutting tool, and a fixed lower blade upon which the sheet metal is clamped. The upper blade is fixed on a ram powered by a hydraulic or mechanical system. And the lower blade is located on the bed of the shearing machine.
Loading the sheet metal: The process begins by placing the metal sheet on the bed of the shearing machine. The bed usually has guides and clamps to secure the workpiece during cutting. The sheet metal is aligned so that the cutting blade makes contact with the sheet metal at the desired cutting line.
Cutting: Next, the ram moves the upper blade towards the lower blade, cutting through the metal sheet. The distance between the blades is calculated depending on the thickness and material of the workpiece.
Unloading: After the cut is made, the metal is removed from the shearing machine.
Deburring: The resulting sheet metal edge has a slightly burred finish, which deburring or other finishing processes can remove. Some parts might require finishing processes such as laser cutting to deburr the edges of the workpiece, painting, or anodizing to modify its appearance and mechanical properties
