Capabilities for Wire EDM Success:

  • Precision Wire EDM Machines: Utilizing thin, conductive wires to erode material through controlled electrical sparks, achieving intricate cuts and tight tolerances.
  • Hard & Conductive Materials: Cutting hardened tool steels, tungsten carbide, titanium, exotic alloys, and other materials difficult to machine conventionally.
  • Complex 2D & 3D Profiles: Producing internal features, intricate geometries, micro-scale parts, tapers, and forms unachievable with traditional machining.
  • Secondary Operations: Integration with grinding, polishing, heat treatment, and other services for complete part solutions.

Norck's Engineering Edge: It's About Performance and Problem-Solving

  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Consulting on optimizing parts for Wire EDM, minimizing cutting time, and improving accuracy.
  • Process Optimization: Tailoring cutting parameters, wire type, and dielectric fluid to achieve optimal surface finish, tolerances, and throughput for your specific material.
  • Workholding & Fixturing: Designing custom fixtures to securely hold delicate or complex workpieces for accurate and repeatable cutting.
  • Focus on Demanding Applications: Extensive experience with Wire EDM for precision molds, medical components, aerospace parts, and other high-value applications.

Why Choose Norck for Wire EDM?

  • Unmatched Precision & Intricacy: Produce parts with features, tolerances, and surface finishes beyond the capabilities of traditional machining.
  • Cut the Hardest Materials: Ideal for hardened steels, conductive alloys, and materials where conventional machining reaches its limits.
  • No Tooling Wear: Wire EDM is a non-contact process, eliminating tool wear concerns and enabling delicate or micro-scale feature creation.
  • Burr-Free & Stress-Free Parts: Wire EDM leaves minimal burrs and does not induce significant stresses into the workpiece material.
  • Your Precision Machining Partner: We work with you to optimize your Wire EDM projects, ensuring quality, accuracy, and on-time delivery.

What is EDM?

It is a thermal cutting process of metal parts using a high voltage electrical discharge, hence the name EDM (Electrical discharge machining). In this technique, electrical discharges (sparks) heat a metallic shape that engraves through the workpiece.

What are the advantages of EDM?

EDM offers more advantages over traditional cutting methods:

Accuracy: EDM offers high tolerances and is more accurate than laser and waterjet cutting.

Clean cuts: There is no impact on the material. Thus, no material deformation and no need for post-processing.

Material thickness: This process cuts through thick and thin materials. And since the material has no impact, it can cut ductile and brittle materials. The downside is that it can cut only conductive materials

Cost-effective: The cutting tool (wire) is about 0.2mm, and the cut has no wasted material, making this process very cost-effective.

Complex shapes: EDM machines can quickly form simple or complex shapes. It is an efficient process but requires well-trained staff to operate and program the machines.

What are the electric discharge machining types?

1. Wire EDM

The first step is to make a hole in the material then the cutting wire is fed through. The cutting wire comes in a wire coil and passes through the material to be collected in another wire coil.

The wire EDM machine uses electrical discharges between the wire (the electrode) and the working piece, as the discharges (sparks) remove material where the wire meets the working piece. To prevent wire wear, we use deionized or dielectric fluid. The wire EDM machine uses a CNC to control the trajectory of the cut.

Wire EDM cut can deviate from the normal of the working piece to make cuts at angles. This process can’t make threads.

2. Sunken EDM

The working piece is put into a tank and submerged in a deionized or dielectric fluid to prevent tool wear. The EDM machine uses electrical discharges between a forming tool and the working piece, as the discharges (sparks) remove material where the forming tool meets the working piece.

The material of the forming tool is graphite or copper, which has the complementary shape of the desired body. The EDM machine uses a CNC to control the trajectory of the cut.

EDM engraving can’t have undercuts, and it can’t make threads. Desired shapes shouldn’t include any undercuts or threads.
